From a high-school club meeting on Webex...
What started out as a high school club meeting sporadically through online video chats has now expanded into a network of young jewelry makers and change makers. Plastic 4 a Purpose now has over 70 members and aims to actively raise awareness about plastic pollution through our jewelry. Club members learn about plastic pollution/climate change related issues, as well as solutions. We hope to expand our outreach and convince others to move away from plastic.

Message from our founder:
"I created Plastic 4 a Purpose in the spring of my sophomore year (2021). Before the pandemic, I was part of another sustainability club at school where we did beach clean-ups. I found myself thinking that the microplastics on the beach were pretty, but I knew how bad plastic is for the environment. I decided to turn my mix of emotions around plastic pollution into something positive: utilizing the beauty of "trash," while removing it from the environment. After taking some jewelry classes at school, I experimented with incorporating microplastics into jewelry. Many people liked the pieces I made, so I decided to teach others how to wire wrap plastic too. However, I did not want people to only think of the jewelry as a cool project, I also wanted to use the jewelry as a vessel to teach others about environmental issues. Through small actions and raising our voices in government, we can be a part of the solution to plastic pollution." -Katerina Im Founder/President of Plastic 4 a Purpose |
